Callus formation and morphogenesis in immature embryos of some buckwheat species (Fagopyrum esculentum, F. tataricum, F. cymosum and F. giganteum) were investigated. It was shown that regenerative ability depended on the species and explant length.The greatest callus formation was found in F. esculentum, F. tataricum and F. giganteum with 2-3 mm embryos and in F. cymosum embryos shorter than 1 mm cultured with integuments. The best length of explants for obtaining of morphogenic callus in F. esculentum (cultivars Kazanskaya-3 and Kama) was 1 mm, in F. giganteum was 1-2 mm and in F. tataricum was 2-3 mm. Characteristic morphotypes were identified for all 4 species and each callus morphotype was investigated for its regenerative ability. Close correlation between some callus morphotypes and regenerative ability was detected.
