For some years, Slater's theory of many-electron atoms has been strongly criticized, particularly in connection with the explanation of Hund's rules. This criticism is discussed. An analysis of the energies of spectroscopic transitions suggests that, in those areas of application where it has proved most useful, the theory can justifiably be retained.
