Natural oak stands in Korea are often established as secondary forests with some human disturbances. The oak stands are easily found at unstable slope surfaces where the potential of surface disturbance is high. In this study it was intended to investigate the structure, biomass and annual production of the natural oak stands in southern Korea Study sites were located at Mt. Baekun near Kwangyang area. Three oak stands were selected as study sites at Mt Baekun. Overstory species were measured for diameter at breast height (dbh), tree height and tree age. Understoty trees were measured for for basal diameter, crown diameter and tree height. The regression equations were developed from destructive analysis of 10 trees for both Q. variabilis and Q. mongolica (Whittaker and Marks 1975). Root biomass was calculated by multiplying root dry weights by the ratio of basal area for samples trees to basal area for all trees within the stands (Satoo 1970). Aboveground biomass and annual production were calculated from measured tree diameter and regressions of tree component weight on diameter at breast height. Understory biomass was measured for Fraxinus sieboldiana, Rhododendron schllppenbachii and Lindera erythrocarpa. Annual production of understory vegetation was calculated by multiplying biomass by the ratio of annual basal area increase to basal area.
