摘要

Sarawak is a forested state of Malaysia, where wood products have been one of the major export commodities. Rapid development driven by growth of wood processing industry, expansion of plantations on the logged over areas, and extension of roads toward the hinterland has brought various socio-economic changes. In the north-central Borneo, there is a stretch of highland. It was, however, divided into two by the international boundary imposed during the colonial period. The Malaysian side as well as the people is called Keiabit, and Kerayan and Berian in the Indonesian side (Map). Though the Keiabit highlands still remain isolated due to the geographic setting to be surrounded by mountains reaching 2,000 meters and located along the international boundary, external economic changes also affected the society and resulted in depopulation. There has been a chain reaction: outflow of younger generation from the highlands to the urban areas and inflow of labor from Kerayan or Berian to the highlands.
