Apple Breeding at Cornell: Fruit Quality and Beyond

Cornell University's apple breeding program is one of the oldest in the U.S. and one of the largest apple breeding programs in the world. 65 named apple varieties, including the well-known Cortland (1915), Macoun (1923), Empire (1968), Jonagold (1966)and the scab resistant Liberty apple were created at Cornell and these varieties have contributed to the apple industry in the U.S. and abroad. By integrating breeding, genetics and genomics, we anticipate having our selections and new varieties becoming international favorites due to their distinctiveness and the consistent quality of the fruits they produce.Having always stressed multi-disciplinary research, we benefit from collaboration. Cornell Cooperative Extension staff (Debbie Breth, Allison DeMaree, Mario Sazo, Steve Hoying, Mike Fargione, Kevin Lung-erman, Craig Kahlke) are actively involved in research related to the breeding program and we benefit greatly from these interactions and their assistance.
