In the last 15 years there have been notable innovations in pear orchard design. These novel plantation types have gone hand in hand with rootstocks of varying vigor, factors that, along with the natural tree malleability of the species pear, have ledto a broad range of orchard training systems.(1, 2, 3, 4, 5) The most popular training system for low-density plantings (LDPs) of 1,000-1,500 trees/ha is still palmette, although its wide spac-ings and relatively high pruning and harvest costs representlimiting factors.
