The Dental Materials Science Program was created at Baylor College of Dentistry in 1982. Three years later, this program became the Department of Dental Materials. In 1990, the name changed to Department of Biomaterials Science. The personnel currently include five faculty members, five staff members, three visiting scientists from Japan, and two graduate students. Departmental research centers around studies of dental amalgam, dental titanium casting, other dental casting alloys, and ceramics used in dentistry. These projects include: an evaluation of the mechanism of mercury release from dental amalgam; a study on further adapting titanium for use in dentistry through examinations of the effect of alloying on properties; a study on the self-healing mechanisms of dental ceramics that could promote mechanical fatigue resistance and longevity of the porcelain; a project on improving titanium-ceramic bonding by minimizing the surface reaction layer on cast titanium through oxide face-coating; an examination of the mechanical and physical properties of laser-welded castable iron-platinum magnetic alloys. The department includes the following testing areas: casting, mechanical testing, x-ray diffraction lab; electron microscopy lab; corrosion testing; atomic absorption lab; and thermal analysis lab. The equipment available in these labs includes a Varian Spectra AA-20 atomic absorption spectrometer, Ticast Super R titanium casting machine, In-stron models 1125 and 1011, Struers FM-7 digital micro-hardness tester, JEOL JSM-6300 scanning electron microscope, Shimadzu Thermogravimetric Analyzer and differential thermal analyzer, Rigaku Miniflex CN2005 x-ray diffractometer, EG&G 273A Potentiostat/Galvanostat, Solartron 1280Z Electrochemical Measurement System, and a Girrbach, Neo-Laser L laser welding machine.
