Dry slip-rolling contact wear testing and wet slip-rolling contact fatigue testing of several austempered cast ironswith various graphite shapes were performed using a Nishihara-type testing machine, and the influences of the graphite shape onthe wear and fatigue characteristics of cast iron wereinvestigated. Changing graphite shape from spheroidal to flakewas found to result in increasing wear loss in both dry and wetconditions. The lower the graphite nodularity is, the earlier alarge amount of wear loss takes place. This is because a lowergraphite nodularity results in a shorter average matrix distancebetween graphites and also a larger stress concentration factor atgraphite tips. The pitting phenomenon is easier to occur insamples with a lower graphite nodularity.
