Jitter transfer function and jitter tolerance of the optical 3R regenerator is experimentally analyzed up to 80 MHz specified in ITU-T G.825. The jitter performance was evaluated comparing result obtained with and without the optical 3R regenerator that was allocated between a 40 Gbit/s-based transmitter and a receiver. In the low frequency region where a jitter suppression effect of the optical 3R regenerator was not observed, insertion of the optical 3R regenerator did not affect the jitter tolerance performance. In contrast, in the high frequency region, the optical 3R regenerator produced the suppression effect of maximum 21.2 dB for 80 MHz but induced the tolerance reduction of about 3 dB. compared to the low frequency region. The ITU-T-based experimental analysis quantitatively clarified mat the optical 3R regenerator involves a tradeoff relationship between the jitter suppression effect and the jitter tolerance reduction.
