On initiative of V.V. Dokuchaev, on March 23, 1888, the Soil Committee was organized under the aegis of the Free Economic Society (FES). The program of its activities embraced a wide range of problems. However, the committee did not have sufficient financial support and had to confine itself to the role of an organizer and consultant of different soil studies. The problems of theoretical and applied soil science and closely related disciplines were discussed during the meetings of the committee. With a view to acquaint people with the achievements of soil science, the Committee exposed its collections at many international and All-Russian exhibitions. In November 1904, the Central Soil Museum attached to the FES was officially opened. The FES and the Soil Committee played an important role in practical mounting and scientific development of pedology.
