Recent drastic changes in Sab-saharan Africa are also leading to the transformation of regional agricultural system and its products. Value addition of the agricultural products is a way to amplify the role of regional agriculture that retains tremendous potential to improve the livelihoods of the poor in the region. Cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.] is an important cash crop for small-scale farmers, especially in dry savanna and Sahel, who have limited options for income generation; it generatedan estimated 2 billion USD in annual revenue, according to FAO (2007-2009 data). Cowpea also serves as a readily available and cheap protein source for the poor, and its high-protein content helps fulfill the nutritional and dietary requirements of people in the region (Kormawa et al., 2002) . Boukar et al. (2012) have suggested some environmental effects on the protein and mineral compositions in grains of 24 selected cowpea breeding lines, and nominated several potential lines with nutrient-enrichedgrains. The present study was initiated to evaluate the effects of environmental conditions on yields and various quality traits, including the protein and mineral compositions of grains in cowpea.
