摘要

This paper investigates stress accent placement of focused disyllabic words in Mandarin Chinese. Initially, two native speakers annotated the accentual prominence patterns (strong-weak, weak-strong, strong-strong) and relative semantic weight of focused disyllables in continuous speech samples recorded from Chinese Central Television news programs. Thereafter, the relationship between prominence patterns and semantic structures was determined using the annotated materials. Results showed that: (1) semantically heavier syllables tend to be stress-accented, and (2) the tonal structure and final position in sentences are precedence factors when words consist of syllables having the same semantic weight.
