摘要

A new upper atmospheric sounding VHF radar was installed at Wakkanai in a northernmost part of Japan. The specification, performance of this radar, and initial comparison result of wind measurements between rawinsonde and VHF radar are presented. This radar system has been developed in order to proceed with studies concerning the coupling of the lower atmosphere (troposphere/stratosphere) and the upper atmosphere including ionosphere which affect the radio wave propagation. The radar can observe the winds from the troposphere to lower stratosphere and from mesosphere to lower thermosphere, and the ionosphere. This system can measure the winds up to about 20 km altitude in a high time resolution of 1 minute continuously. It is also described that this VHF radar system has various possibilities of practical use in the field of space, aeronautics and navigation, for instance a basic data acquisition of winds for not only developing the stratospheric platform and next generation SST but also forecasting aviation meteorology, launching rocket and so on.
