摘要

The Kaluga urban authority has taken an active role in promoting the province's agriculture and food sector. As well as supporting such activities as personnel training and produce markets, it has a direct interest in 7 large agricultural enterprises whose operations include dairy, meat, poultry, and arable production, and also pedigree horse breeding. One incorporates a college for training dairy personnel. The authority is also working with private dairy producers. In view of general economic difficulties, the 7 enterprises are currently exempt from local taxation and have been relieved of the need to fund housing and social services. Other projects include a soil fertility programme and glasshouse renovation. An inter-regional wholesale markethas been created, and close working links between producers and processors are being encouraged. By 1999 the volume of processing operations had been stabilised and begun to expand. Local food products have won awards, and a series of food fairs has beenheld. Agricultural enterprises are establishing their own sales outlets. A major social project has been initiated to supply disabled people, war veterans, hospital patients, and others in need with quality food. Work is also being done to encourage home production by allotment holders.
