Diseases of the gastrointestinal tract are a common reason for dogs and cats to be presented to a veterinarian. In a recent study, gastrointestinal problems accounted for 13.9% of new insurance claims for dogs and 11.8% of new claims for cats. Gastrointestinal diseases in pets exhibit a wide variety of clinical signs, such as vomiting, diarrhea, and weight loss. Thus, to arrive at the most appropriate diagnosis, veterinarians need to employ diagnostic tests. Although no diagnostic test is always positive in a patient with a particular disease and no diagnostic test is always negative in a patient without the disease, the clinician needs to strive to use tests that show the highest clinical accuracy. In addition, the tests should be economical and as minimally invasive as possible.
