Interfacial Phenomena of the Oxide Film in Aluminum Melt

Troublesome to observe the oxide film entrapped in aluminum casting, the technical method of ultrasonic vibration treatment was conducted in this study. Oxygen content resided in the interfacial layer between oxide film and aluminum matrix has been measured in this study. The extent of interfacial layer grew as a function of holding time (hrs) of the aluminum melt. For an Al melt with a long holding time, the extent of interfacial layer is large and composed of possibly different constituents from Al matrix to oxide film (mainly 7 -Al{sub}2O{sub}3). These different products were partly confirmed by the test of nano-hardness. Rare earth metal, Yttrium, added in the Al melt influenced significantly on the development of interfacial layer and changed the morphology oxide film as well.
