Cardiotocographic Study of the Effect of Geomagnetic Disturbances at High Latitudes on the Intrauterine State of the Fetus

The effect of geomagnetic disturbances on the intrauterine development of the fetus at high latitudes was studied by comparing the fetal state index with the heliogeophysical indices (the planetary K_p index and the D_(st) index). The functional state of the fetus in late pregnancy was evaluated by cardiotocography. The fetal cardiomonitoring data were processed using a computer program according to a Demidov's procedure in order to calculate the integral fetal state index. Pronounced variations were found in the maximal values of the fetal state index (in approximately 15% of all cases). These variations coincided with the seasonal variations in geomagnetic disturbances. This index was maximal near equinox (March–April–May, October–November) and was minimal near solstice. The comparison of the fetal state index with the geomagnetic disturbance indices showed that the fetal state index is maximal when the geomagnetic activity is either maximal or minimal.
