Bleeding breakout due to longitudinal corner cracking had frequently occurred m the bow-type slab caster in the steelmaking shop of China Steel. From the investigation of breakout shell, measurement of mold heat removal and taper, analysis of shell strain and fluid flow in mold, a formation mechanism was proposed. After applying the counter-measures, the breakout ratio was effectively reduced.
