This study analyzed the structures and functions of utterances in Japanese learner's argument by E-mail, and investigated how Japanese learners' consideration of interpersonal relations is reflected in the argument by examining the relations between the structures and functions of utterances, the way of expressions of opinions, and the components of the argument. The results showed that Japanese learners express agreement with others very clearly at the beginning of the text, while they display great cautiousness in expressing opposite opinions after giving a reason for their position and do not clearly criticize others, which is similar to Japanese style of argument.
