Performance evaluation of handoff (HO) control methods for the next-generation mobile communication system is reported. Two data link-layer hard handoff (L2-HHO) controls which realize the HO within a subnet are evaluated in Orthogonal Frequency and Code Division Multiplexing (OFCDM) environment; Method 1, which buffers packets to the MN at the old base station (BS) and then transfers them to the new BS, and Method 2, in which the old BS transmits packets, during HO processing time, which has already arrived to the old BS when HO processing starts. Numerical results show that (1) when HO processing time of 5 ms is assumed, Method 1 minimizes both packet error rate and transmission delay, and that (2) when HO processing time of 50 ms is assumed, Method 2 reduces the packet transmission delay without degrading packet error rate severely. Assuming that HO processing time will be shortened by improvement in the hard processing speed and in the speed of network between base stations, it is considered that Method 1 achieves better performance.
