Lanthanide alkyl-hydrido clusters [(Ap*Ln)_3(_2-H)_3(_3-H)_2(CH_2SiMe _3) (thf)_2] (Ln=Er, Yb) have been synthesized. The reaction occurs selectively through protonolysis of the Y-C bond and results in the formation of the cationic trinuclear hydrido complex [(Ap*Y) _3(_2-H)_3(_3-H)_2(thf) _3][B(C_6F_5)_4] (see scheme; Y green, H red, O pink, N blue, C gray).
