An analysisofsurfacecurrentdataobtainedfrom2002to2005usinglong-rangehigh-frequencyradarprovidesthefirstevidenceforthepresenceofbiweekly(11–14day)periodicvariationsoftheKuroshio axis northeastofTaiwan.Thisanalysisclarifiesthespatiotemporalcharacteristicsofthesevariations and revealsthatcyclonic/anticycloniceddiespropagatingalongtheshelfslopefromthevicinityofthe deep channeleastofTaiwaninducethesevariationsnortheastofTaiwan.Thebehaviorofthecyclonic/ anticyclonic eddiesontheshelfslopeiswellexplainedby2nd-modeinteriorshelfwavesadvectedby the Kuroshio’smeanflow.RemoteeffectsfromthevicinityofthedeepchanneleastofTaiwan,orfrom outsidetheEastChinaSea,arebelievedtoplayanimportantroleinthegenerationofthesebiweekly periodicvariationsoftheKuroshioaxisnortheastofTaiwan.Moreover,ontheshelfslope,these variationscauseanonshorecurrentacrosstheshelfslope,suggestingtopographicallycontrolled upwelling. Therefore,thebiweeklyperiodicvariationsoftheKuroshioaxisnortheastofTaiwanmight contributenotonlytotheonshoretransportofKuroshiosurfacewaterbutalsototransportnutrient- rich KuroshiosubsurfacewaterontotheshelfintheEastChinaSea.
