Evaluation of loquat cultivar in SanTan District Anhui, China.

Literature search and field investigation were done to determine the history and current production status and loquat cultivar resources in ZhangTan, MianTan, and YueTan Village, collectively called SanTan, SheXian, Anhui, China. According to record in SheXian Annals, loquat (Eriobotrya japonica Lindl.) production in YueTan started in Song Dynasty from 962 to 1179, and prevailed in Kangxi and Jiaqing period of Qing Dynasty from 1662 to 1820. Twelve representative cultivars were found there. The main cultivar in production was 'Dahongpao', 'Guangrong' and 'Chaobao', that accounted for 80% of loquat production area. The botanical characteristic of the 12 typical cultivars were observed and their fruit traits were evaluated by multilevel model of fuzzy synthetic valuation. There was a microclimate condition suitable to loquat growth in SanTan District Anhui Province, which belonged to the north-cultivated-marginal area of loquat commercial production in China. Twelve representative cultivars were found there. The excellent cultivars 'Changbingbianhe', 'Dahongpao', 'Guangrong' and 'Huangpao' could be popularized on a large scale in local production, and 'Changbingbianhe', 'Dahongpao' and 'Guangrong' also could be used as worthy parent material for the breeding of new cultivar resistant to winter hardness.
