Global temperatures are predicted to increase by 1.1 to 6.4 degrees C between 1990 and 2100 depending on CO2 emission scenarios, with CO2 atmospheric concentration projected to increase in the range 550 to 850 ppm. Precipitation changes are also expected in varying amount and sign depending on world location. These changes will impact agriculture and require adaptation to changing conditions. Irrigated tree fruit production will be no exception. For irrigated tree fruit production, changes in water supply and demand can be critical. All tree fruit-producing regions will be affected to some degree. This article briefly discusses expected effects of warming on fruit trees, potential changes on fruit tree water use, net irrigation requirements and availability of irrigation water, and addresses possible adaptations to water shortages.
