Determination of aflatoxins in selected foods and animal feed in Khartoum State, Sudan.

摘要

Aflatoxins are natural toxins that contaminate various types of food and feedstuff leading to health risk in both humans and animals. The aim of this study was to determine prevalence of aflatoxins contamination and their levels in food and feed. The aflatoxins were extracted using one of the methods approved by AOAC, then separated and determined by High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) adopting Fluorescence Detection. The study showed out of 140 samples of food and feed analyzed 40 samples were found contaminated with aflatoxins. The highest content was detected in animal feed while peanut butter contained the minimum content. From the total samples 70% were found free of aflatoxins and 30% were contaminated with range of total aflatoxins ND-152.5. Aflatoxin B1 was the most common contaminant followed by aflatoxin B2, aflatoxin G1, and lastly aflatoxin G2.
