The European Parliament’s Agriculture Committee has voted to reject European Commission proposals that would give member states the power to ban the use of EU-approved genetically modified food or feed. The outcome was not a surprise. Earlier committee debates had made it clear that MEPs felt that such bans would distort trade within the EU, and jeopardise food production because the European livestock sector is heavily dependent on imports of GM feed.
