A weak US Mid-West maize market contributed to an 18.7% decline in American Vanguard’s crop protection sales to $59.5 million in the first quarter of 2015. The reduced restocking of inventories that adversely impacted 2014 revenues continued into 2015, the company points out. While inventory levels have been reduced, procurement continues to be challenged by low maize commodity prices, resulting in delayed or reduced maize plantings. Insecticide sales fell by 26% to $34.4 million. Sales of granular soil insecticides were down by about 25%, largely due to the weak US maize market. Sales of Mocap (ethoprophos) and Nemacur (fenamiphos), which are used primarily outside the US, were down slightly on the same period last year. Sales of Thimet (phorate) for use on peanuts and sugar cane were “somewhat lower” due to a shift in purchase timing. Non-granular insecticide sales fell by 35%. The cotton insecticide, Bidrin (dicrotophos), represented about half of that decline due to reduced cotton plantings, with the remainder spread across active ingredients that face generic competition: acephate, bifenthrin and permethrin.
