Members of the European Parliament have called for alternative proposals on genetically modified food and feed, rather than simply rejecting those put forward by the European Commission. The Parliament’s Environment and Agriculture Committees were holding separate debates on Commission proposals to allow member states to ban the use of EU-approved GM food and feed. The majority echoed previous criticism that the proposals were impractical and conflict with free-trade laws, but many believed that a simple rejection would not solve any problems. However, while Environment MEPs urged the Commission to produce an alternative, Agriculture MEPs thought that the Parliament should come forward with its own proposals. Around half of those speaking in the agriculture meeting urged the inclusion of either a “root and branch” reform of the EU authorisation process for GMOs, or an EU-wide ban on the products.
