A coalition led by the US Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) is urging the US House of Representatives to support a bill to block states from requiring labels on genetically modified foods and to set up a voluntary federal labelling standard. In a letter sent to House members last week, the Coalition for Safe and Affordable Food warned that failure to keep states from imposing mandatory GM food labelling rules would “exacerbate consumer confusion” and increase food prices. “We believe that it is imperative that Congress pass a bipartisan bill this year to ensure people across our nation continue to have access to consistent science-based standards for food labelling,” the coalition said on behalf of a lengthy list of some 375 major food and biotechnology companies as well as key food industry and grower groups.
