摘要

EU member states should be able to ban the cultivation of approved genetically modified crops without having to negotiate with companies beforehand. They should also be able to base their bans on a wide range of environmental factors. The proposals are among several voted through by the European Parliament’s Environment Committee in November, and relate to the long-running issue of whether to give member states greater freedom to restrict the use of GM crops. The Committee’s report will go forward for a vote by the full Parliament. Its view differs significantly from that of EU Ministers, indicating that negotiations are far from over.
