Researchers at DuPont seed subsidiary DuPont Pioneer have identified a non-Bt protein for the control of western corn rootworms (WCR - Diabrotica virgifera virgifera). Designated IPD072Aa, the protein has been isolated from the bacterium, Pseudomonas chlororaphis. Genetically modified maize plants expressing the protein show protection from WCR injury under field conditions, according to research published this month in the journal, Science. IPD072Aa leaves several lepidopteran and hemipteran insect species unaffected, but is effective in killing WCR larvae that are resistant to Bt proteins in existing GM maize lines, the scientists note. DuPont Pioneer researchers have also used RNAi technology against WCR. Research published in Scientific Reports describes the discovery of the new gene targets, dvssj1 and dvssj2, in WCR. Diet-based feeding assays using double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) targeting these genes showed targeted mRNA suppression, larval growth inhibition and mortality. In addition, GM maize expressing dsRNA to one of these gene targets (dvssj1) showed a significant reduction in root damage by WCR, the scientists point out.
