The Canadian Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) proposes to allow the continued registration of the herbicide, dichlobenil, following a special review of the active ingredient. The review was triggered by the decisions of Norway and the EU to ban the herbicide on environmental grounds in 2000 and 2011, respectively. The decisions were based on concerns over: the potential of the dichlobenil metabolite, 2,6-dichlorobenzamide (BAM) to leach into ground water; potential for long-range transport of BAM; potential acute risk of dichlobenil to birds; potential chronic risk of dichlobenil and BAM to birds and mammals; and potential risk of dichlobenil to the aquatic environment.
