The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) proposes to ban the use of the organophosphate insecticide/acaricide, omethoate, on all food crops following a lengthy re-evaluation of the active ingredient. The APVMA began its review of omethoate and the related ai, dimethoate, in 2004 because of concerns over acute and chronic toxicity. The Authority suspended the use of dimethoate on some 60 food crops in 2011. Omethoate is a breakdown product of dimethoate and is known to be "considerably more toxic", the APVMA notes.
