摘要

current research is focusing on defining the control of pluri-potency and lineage determination of pluripotent cells, particularly of embryonic stem (ES) cells. ES cells are usually produced from the inner cell mass (ICM) of the blastocyst and are considered equivalent to ICM cells captured during a short period of transient self-renewal and pluripotency capability. Nowadays, ES cells represent an incredible in vitro model to study critical aspects of cell sternness and early embryonic development. ES cells are indeed the only stem cell type able to self-renew indefinitely and to differentiate into cellular derivates of ectodermal, mesodermal, and endodermal lineages (8). Several studies in this matter have detailed on peculiar in vitro culturing protocols for ES cells, with the main effort to optimize ES cell pluripotency, maintenance, and controlled induction of differentiation (1, 6, 9).
