The California Air Resources Board (ARB) is developing plans to introduce coal mine methane capture as an offset protocol in the state's greenhouse gas (GHG) cap-and-trade program. ARB is working on a coal mine methane offset protocol that could supply a maximum 300mn carbon credits by 2020, potentially offering an additional revenue stream for coal producers. About 11.6pc of all US anthropogenic methane emissions result from coal mining, according to ARB.
