German antitrust regulators have imposed fines totaling ?41.4 million ($55 million) on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) distributors Westfalen and Propan Rheingas for anticompetitive behavior between 1997 and the May 2005 launch of the investigation. The Bundeskartellamt had already imposed fines of ?209 million against nine LPG distributors and their di- rectors for operating a cartel (IOD Dec.20'07,p8). It said the firms - all members of national trade body DVFG - had since 1997 agreed to turn away customers wanting to switch suppliers, and to deter those who persisted with inflated price quotes.
