Local councils in England will soon be allowed to sell green electricity they produce to the national grid network, in a planned over-haul of existing legislation, climate change secretary Chris Huhne said Wednesday. The proposed move will go ahead if Huhne manages to amend a law dating from 1976 that bars the practice, he told a local government association meeting. “It’s ridiculous that the 1976 Local Government Act prevents councils from selling electricity from local wind turbines, or from anaerobic digestion. I want to see this repealed and by the end of the year I hope local authorities will be able to sell electricity from renewables,” he said.
