With the ink barely dry on Canada's federal election ballots, momentum is increasing to build new -and controversial -pipelines from Alberta to the western coast to help create new Asian markets for Western Canadian oil and gas. Last week, Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach told the ambassadors of China and India that the National Energy Board (NEB) would launch hearings into Enbridge's proposed Northern Gateway pipeline in January. With the pro-business Conservative Party gaining a parliamentary majority in this month's elections, resource-rich provinces such as Alberta are expected to find it much easier to gain approval for projects such as Northern Gateway (IOD May4,p3).
