Chevron said it has appealed a ruling against the company handed down last month by a court in Ecuador in a long-running case over oil pollution in the Amazon jungle. The provincial court fined Chevron $8.6 billion, ruling that as the parent company of Texaco, Chevron was liable for environmental damage caused by spills from the the La-go Agrio field which Texaco operated in the 1980s (IOD Feb.15,p3).
