Alaska Governor Sean Parnell is calling for large volumes of gas stranded in the far north of the state to be exported to booming Asian markets as LNG, now that a surge in US shale gas production appears to have killed off plans to build a pipeline to ship it to the Lower 48 states. Parnell has urged the three big companies active in the remote North Slope region — BP, ConocoPhillips and Exxon Mobil — to develop plans for a pipeline that would transport gas to the port of Valdez in south- ern Alaska, where it could be liquefied and shipped to Asian markets.
