Despite speculation that China’s crude imports could dramatically rise this year on the back of more strategic petroleum reserve (SPR) storage tanks reaching completion, total volumes will likely be dependent on international crude prices and domestic oil demand (IOD Jan.9’12). Several Beijing-based industry officials say China needs to wait for the right opportunity — when international oil prices are at reasonable levels — before state buyers move to top up soon-to-be completed SPR facilities.
