As had been widely predicted, the incumbent office-holder Dilma Rousseff will face a second-round runoff after failing to secure more than 50% of the vote in Brazil's presidential election on Sunday. However, the first round of voting did deliver a surprise participant in the runoff: pro-business candidate Senator Aecio Neves whose freemarket policies to promote growth contrast sharply with Rousseff's model of state intervention in the economy.
