In a bid to kick - start investment in its oil and gas sector and boost natural gas production, Cairo signed a number of deals with international oil companies (IOCs) at an investment conference at Sharm al - Sheikh in Sinai over the weekend. The agreements at the Egyptian Economic Development Conference are designed to restore confidence in Egypt's oil and gas sector after the government's failure to honor its payment commitments to IOCs that arose from tattered state finances -- a result of political turmoil from the 2011 revolution. Last December, Cairo paid $2.1 billion to a group of IOCs, including two oil majors, reducing its outstanding debt to $3.1 billion ( IOD Jan.2'15 ).
