Over 360,000 more diesel cars were sold on Western Europe's booming auto market in 2015 than in the previous year, with the fuel emerging from the Volkswagen (VW) emissions scandal "relatively unscathed" but still declining in popularity, according to consultants LMC Automotive. Diesel's share of new car sales in Western Europe dipped from 53.3% to 51.7% last year. "The trend continues to follow that seen since peak diesel share in 2011, driven by a shift in the relative merits and costs of fuel types, rather than by a loss of confidence in diesel," suggests LMC, which says any negative sentiment would have become apparent in the December .--if not November--data (IOD Dec.10'15).
