Determination of earthquake focal depths and source timefunctions in central Asia using teleseismic P waveforms

摘要

We developed a new method to determine earthquakesource time functions and focal depths.It uses theoreticalGreen's function and a time-domain deconvolution withpositivity constraint to estimate the source time functionfrom the teleseismic P waveforms.The earthquake focaldepth is also determined in the process by usingthetimeseparations of the direct P and depth phases. We applied thismethod to 606 earthquakes between 1990 and 2005 inCentral Asia.The results show that the Centroid MomentTensor solutions, which are routinely computed forearthquake larger than M5.0 globally using very longperiod body and surface waves,systematically over-estimated the source depths and durations,especially forshallow events. Away from the subduction zone, most ofthe 606 earthquakes occurred within the top 20 km ofcrust. This shallow distribution of earthquakes suggests ahigh geotherm and a weak ductile lower crust in theregion.
