Asolar terminator wave (TW)is found in high-resolution general circulation model(GCM)simulations ofMars' atmosphere.In the horizontal plane at 160 km the wavefronts follow the westwardmovingduskterminator, exhibita horizontal wavelength of order 1800-3600 km,and areoriented about 10°-30°with respect to the terminator.Thedisturbance originates in the lower atmosphere due todustabsorptionofsolarradiation,propagates upward with aneffective vertical wavelength of order 60 km,andincreases inamplitude as the assumed dust distribution extends furtheraway from the surface. The TW density amplitudes for lowand elevated dust layers (both with opacities=1.0) are oforder +15-20% and+30at160km.Temperature and windperturbations fortheformer case are of order +10-20K and+30-75 m/s. The Mars TW shares many common featureswith a TW recently observed in Earth's thermosphereandsimulated with a terrestrial GCM.
