Earthquake predictability depends, in part,on thedegree to which sudden slip is preceded by slow aseismicslip.Recently,observations of deep tremor have enabledinferences of deep slow slip even when detection by othermeans is not possible,but these data are limited to certainareasandmostlythelastdecade.TheregionnearParkfield,California,provides a unique convergence of several yearsof high-quality tremor data bracketing a moderateearthquake,the 2004 magnitude 6.0 event. Here, I presentdetailed observations of tectonic tremor from mid-2001through 2008 that indicate deep fault slip both before andafter the Parkfield earthquake that cannot be detected withsurface geodetic instruments. While there is no obviousshort-term precursor,I find unidirectional tremor migrationaccompanied by elevated tremor rates in the 3 months priorto the earthquake, which suggests accelerated creep on thefault ~16 km beneath the eventual earthquake hypocenter.
