Impact of midlatitude stationary waves on regional Hadley cellsand ENSO

Stationary planetary waves are excited in themidlatitudes, propagate equatorward and are absorbed inthe subtropics.The impact these waves have on the tropicalclimate has yet to be fully unraveled. Previous work hasshown that interannual variability of zonal-mean stationaryeddy stress is well correlated with interannual variability inHadley cell strength. A separate line of research has shownthat changes in midlatitude planetary waves local to thePacific strongly affect ENSO variability. Here, we show thatthe two phenomena are in fact closely connected.Interannual variability of wave activity flux impinging onthe subtropical central Pacific affects the local Hadley cell.The associated changes in subtropical subsidence affect thesurface pressure field and wind stresses,which in turn affectENSO.As a result,a winter with an anomalously weakHadley cell tends to be followed a year later by an El Ninoevent.
