Detection of a ULVZ at the base of the mantlebeneath the northwest Pacific

We used the Yellowknife seismic array (YKA) tomeasure the slowness of 1,371 P and Pdiff waves fromearthquakes occurring in the circum-Pacific region. Thecorresponding anomalies in P-velocity show a sharpreduction of up to 6% across a patch of the lowermostmantle beneath the Northwest Pacific with lateraldimensions of several hundredkilometers.Thelocation ofthis ultra low velocity zone (ULVZ) correlates with a long-wavelength compositional boundary revealed byprobabilistic mantle tomography. We interpret the ULVZas partial melt created by paleo-slab material that is beingswept laterally from northwestern Pacificsubductionzonestowards the large, chemically distinct province beneath thesouthcentralPacific.
