A statistical model for tornado frequency from Gulf ofMexico landfalling tropical cyclones(TCs)is developedusing TC size,intensity, recurvature,and mid-level specifichumidity data. New datasets are assembled for tornadofrequency and for TC size at landfall as measured by theradius of outer closed isobar and distance of tornado fromthe TC center.Owing to systematic undercounting oftornadoes,the model is used to reconstruct the TC tornadoclimatology back to 1948,and further back to 1920 using amodified model that does not include mid-level specifichumidity.Relative to the previous active period for Gulf TClandfalls of 1948-1964,the active period since 1995 hasseen a statistically significant increase(95% level)inmedian TC tornadoes and in the frequency of large TCtornado outbreaks.These changes are linked to an increasein the median size andfrequencyoflargeGulflandfallingTCs.
